About Playlist

In 1970, Rod Stewart—who turns 75 on January 10, 2020—released two albums that would shape the course of rock 'n' roll and begin to cement a legacy. The debut studio release by his rough-and-tumble blues-rock band Faces, First Step, met mixed reviews but carved a path of influence to be followed by revivalists like the Black Crowes and Primal Scream and countless Britpop bands (from Oasis to Supergrass). Meanwhile, Stewart's solo effort Gasoline Alley (featuring the soulfully attitudinal title track and "Cut Across Shorty") proved that this rooster- haired, sandpaper-voiced Scotsman—Rod the Mod—could stand tall on his own. And while his originals ("Maggie May," "Stay With Me") have held up as classics, he’s also one of this era's greatest stylists/interpreters, putting a bleeding-heart touch on songs written or made famous by the likes of Tom Waits (the excellent "Downtown Train," performed here with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Oasis ("Cigarettes and Alcohol"), Elvis Presley ("Jailhouse Rock," as part of the Jeff Beck Group), Bobby Darin ("Beyond the Sea"), Cat Stevens ("The First Cut Is the Deepest") and so many more. Long live Rod the Mod. © Qobuz
