About Playlist
Meat Loaf, born Marvin Lee Aday, was undeniably one of the most successful musicians of his generation. Along with friend and collaborator Jim Steinman (the two met at the auditions for the Broadway production of Hair; in addition to theater roles, Meat Loaf would go on to act in over 60 films, most notably in Fight Club and The Rocky Horror Picture Show), he created a unique blend of rock & roll, prog-rock and art rock with which he became synonymous. Theatrical staging, bombastic sounds, dramatic lyrics and elements borrowed from classical music characterize this typical, overloaded "rock opera" style, which made Meat Loaf's songs seem more like excerpts from musicals than radio hits. Nevertheless, Meat Loaf had a few hits and commercial records during his career, including his 1977 album Bat Out of Hell, one of the best-selling album of all time with over 43 million copies sold. "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth," and "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)" are just some of the pompously powerful songs that we will remember beyond the singer's death in January 2022.
