About Playlist

King Crimson – An Introduction Formed in 1969, King Crimson's peak popularity in terms of demand for live performances is either when they performed to an audience of up to 650,000 at The Rolling Stones' Hyde Park concert in July 1969 or in 2019 celebrating 50 years performing at the Rock In Rio Festival in front of an audience of 100,000, broadcast to a TV audience of up to 10 million.

In between those two points in time, there have been many changes in King Crimson's personnel. However at the centre of it throughout has been guitarist Robert Fripp, who has overseen radical shifts in musical direction that contrast sharply, sometimes from one album to the next.

As with any band with a long and complex history, making any form of introductory compilation is a rather risky and possibly foolish prospect.

Long-term fans all have a favourites set-list in their minds, if not already on CD/hard drive/streaming service of choice. Many have their own chosen eras/band line-ups, and King Crimson's status is as much derived from its live performances as from its studio recordings.

So, rather than attempt a "best of," this list presents an alternative history of King Crimson, presented, more or less, chronologically in respect of the original recordings selected but using versions of some of those tracks which, while representative of the band's rich history of studio and live recordings, offers a slightly different take on many of the band's key pieces.

It stretches from the band's first recordings in 1969, to material recorded on the 2019 tour and aims to be comprehensive but not exhaustive. It's largely drawn from a series of tracks which were released on a weekly basis throughout the band's 50th anniversary year — each one accompanied by an introductory commentary from producer/manager David Singleton, all of which are also readily available and informative.

If this is your first encounter with King Crimson and you like what you've heard, welcome; there’s a universe of additional material to explore. If you are already acquainted with some aspects of King Crimson's output, this playlist may provide a slightly unfamiliar take on a catalogue that's brimming with depth and detail.

Either way, the music is there to be listened to and, hopefully, enjoyed. - Declan Colgan (DGM Live), April 2020
