Born in Téboulba, Tunisia, Dhafer Youssef grew up in a humble family of muezzins. He left Tunis for Vienna, seeking broader musical horizons. Today, Youssef is a master oud player and distinctive vocalist, blending jazz with Sufi, Indian and Nordic sounds. His collaborations include Paolo Fresu, Eivind Aarset, and Bugge Wesseltoft. Onstage, he crafts improvisations that feel both intimate and transcendent.His 2023 release, Street of Minarets, recorded in Los Angeles with Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and Dave Holland, reflects his global vision—a meeting point between cultures and genres.
