Although Chris Stapleton has become Nashville’s MVP since his 2015 debut, Traveller, stormed the charts and made him an awards-show favorite, he’s hardly an overnight Cinderella story. The Kentucky native has been kicking around the country capital since the early 2000s, when he signed his first publishing deal. You may not realize that Stapleton’s behind a slew of hits for other artists, including Thomas Rhett, Kenny Chesney, Kelly Clarkson, Darius Rucker and many more. From 2007 to 2010 he fronted the bluegrass band The Steeldrivers, but his (underrated) first solo single, "What Are You Listening To?" flopped and his intended debut album was never released. A brilliant melding of outlaw country, Southern rock, '70s balladry and guitar blues, Traveller changed everything, though, and it’s been nothing but an upward trajectory for his subsequent albums and singles—not to mention collaborations with Dolly Parton, Justin Timberlake, Sheryl Crow, Pink and others.
