About Playlist

Aaron Copland is probably the most important North American composer of the 20th century. There are others, of course, such as Charles Ives, Bernard Herrmann, Carl Ruggles, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, but there is no doubt that Copland was able to express part of the uniqueness of the United States, a new creative continent. Copland's work is very diverse, and alongside the fairly popular works (Rodeo, Appalachian Spring, Symphony No. 3), there are more unknown masterpieces in the same vein: The Tender Land (an opera on American rural life, from which Copland has extracted a concert suite) and Quiet City (a kind of modern and urban symphonic poem, with incredible poetry), which must be discovered. But next to this "populist" and deeply lyrical Copland, there is the modern one, too—one who made the rocky, arid landscapes of the great American lands his own. The confusing "Connotations," the very strange "Inscape" and the dynamic "Orchestral Variations" and "Piano Fantasy" remain scores with a far-reaching impact, which will not reveal itself at first listen, and from which the "Old American Songs" have disappeared. This playlist will give you as much variety in Copland's work as possible.
