About Playlist

A giant of German classical music, Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) often appeared as a rigorist devoid of imagination. His immense discographic legacy for Decca, still quite rare at the time, has been reissued in excellent quality, making it possible to appreciate his all too often underrated music. Backhaus appears more modern than ever, thanks to his respect of musical text and his unadorned interpretations that best encapsulate the composers, from the first recording ever made of a concerto, that of Grieg, severely abridged in 1909, to his last concert a few days before his death.
