About Playlist

The expression "the real McCoy" refers to something or someone for whom we want to characterize as legitimate, and not an imitation. It's also the title of McCoy Tyner's seventh album (also his first for the Blue Note label), one of the greatest records of the jazz legend who died on March 6, 2020, at the age of 81. The Philadelphia native was labeled "John Coltrane's pianist" but in reality, Coltrane was also "McCoy's saxophonist." All jokes aside, Coltrane was aware of the importance of his pianist, having declared in 1961 that McCoy had given him wings and allowed him to fly by managing almost all the harmonies alone. By looking at his extensive and at times eclectic discography, we realize the legacy of a stylist who never stopped moving forward.
