About Playlist
Upon the release of his new album Office Politics, pop magician Neil Hannon, the mastermind behind The Divine Comedy, has curated a playlist of his favorite songs. An eclectic selection full of surprises!
1. Les Fleurs - Minnie Riperton
Astounding early 70s orchestral psychedelia from the late great, Minnie Riperton. Interestingly the noted comic actress, Maya Rudolph, is Minnie's daughter.
2. Double Dutch - Malcolm McLaren
It's 1983. It's pop saboteur McLaren and production genius Trevor Horn. It's a crazy mix of hip hop, african pop and new york skipping troupes. What's not to like.
3. Watermelon Man (Headhunters version, 1973) - Herbie Hancock
Hypnotic, weird and ultra cool.
4. Can't Get It Out Of My Head - ELO
A wonderful early slice of the Electric Light Orchestra. One of the first of so many beautifully arranged and impossibly catchy tunes.
5. As Time Goes By - Harry Nilsson
The last track from his standards album, A Little Touch of Schmilsson in The Night. It's like slipping into a warm bath. One with lots of soapy bubbles and and candles round the outside.
6. Love Action (I Believe In Love) - The Human League
Classy, glassy synth pop. One of my very favourite noises to put in my ear-holes.
7. O Superman - Laurie Anderson
O superman - o judge - o mom and dad - o wow! The surprise UK hit of 1981...
8. Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) - Kate Bush
Still sounds as fresh today as when I first heard it.
9. You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore
Love this. It's like the lyrical antidote to Wishing And Hoping (I adore Bacharach and David but that one was soooo sexist!)
10. The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks
"We are the custard pie appreciation consortium. God save the George Cross and all those who were awarded them." Ray Davies: pop's greatest lyricist.
11. Like A Daydream - Ride
Can't hear the lyrics? Doesn't matter. Just look at the floor, shake your floppy hair around and think sensitive thoughts.
12. Michael Caine - Madness
One of Britain's most beloved bands, and yet strangely underrated as songwriters and musicians.
13. Summertime Blues - The Flying Lizards
This is all wrong. And that's why it's so brilliant.
14. Deacon Blues - Steely Dan
"This is the day of the expanding man, that shape is my shade, there where I used to stand." Don't fight it, just feel it!
15. All Night Long (All Night) - Lionel Richie
Phew, Lionel's singing, everything is ALL RIGHT.
