Aretha Franklin wasn't just the Queen of Soul. From her gospel roots, to her memorable performance at President Barack Obama’s inauguration, Aretha Franklin was the Voice of America. She sang of comfort, pain and strength, delivered in that inimitable, divine voice, and establishing a post-war soundtrack of civil rights and feminist struggles. Often imitated but never equaled, Franklin's influence was immeasurable. After battling pancreatic cancer, Franklin died in her Detroit home at the age of 76 on August 16, 2018.
