Will Samson
Presenting a refined mix of ethereal electronic ambient music and organic composition, Britain's Will Samson began releasing music in the early 2010s. Through his solo releases and collaborations like 2015's Animal Hands LP with Heimer, Samson's music creates a delicate balance between textured experimentalism and more straightforward acoustic songwriting, with the latter coming to the fore on albums like 2017's Welcome Oxygen and 2019's Paralanguage.
Born in England of Luso-Indian descent, Samson started his career in 2010, debuting on the Japanese label Plop with Hello Friends, Goodbye Friends. After a series of U.K. and European tours playing with acts like Ólafur Arnalds, Do Make Say Think, and Marissa Nadler, he released his 2012 follow-up, Balance, on the German label Karaoke Kalk. With this album, Samson began to utilize analog tape methods which would come to define his recording approach over subsequent releases. Following a pair of collaborations, 2013's It Grows Again EP with Tom Demac and 2015's Animal Hands album with Heimer, he issued his next solo release, Ground Luminosity. Released in 2015 it found Samson again switching labels, this time to French imprint Talitres Records. During this time, he also acted as touring drummer for the art-pop band Fenster. A period spent living in Portugal influenced his next release. Recorded upon his return to England, Samson took a more organic and minimalist approach for 2017's Welcome Oxygen, which found him using nylon-string guitar and violin as the primary instruments alongside his hushed vocals. Relocating to Brussels, Samson continued to focus on the acoustic elements of his sound on 2019's deeply introspective Paralanguage, his first effort for the Wichita label.
