The Byson Family

Glaswegian roots rock quintet the Byson Family play a kind of rough-hewn Americana inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, and the Band. The Byson Family was formed in 2018 by Phil Campbell, a recording veteran of more than 20 years and then-frontman of Southern rockers the Temperance Movement. Campbell had gradually become more disillusioned with his place in the Temperance Movement since the 2015 departure of guitarist and founding member Luke Potashnick -- who had encouraged him to join the band -- and he was burned out by performing their newer, heavier material. Realizing he needed to make a fresh start, he reached out to two longtime friends, former Paolo Nutini bassist Mike McDaid and guitarist Christian "Fleetwood" McCabe of the 68's. The band was completed by 68's keyboardist Chris Russell and Jon Fratelli's drummer Allan James. They recorded some demos and were excited by the results. Their music was loose and somewhat folky roots rock with a distinct Americana sound. The Byson Family's first show, at St. Luke's in Glasgow, was well-received both by fans and the music press and they began writing in earnest. In 2020, Campbell finally left the Temperance Movement to focus full-time on the Byson Family. Their debut album, Kick the Traces, was released in 2021.
