Luke Evans
While Welsh actor Luke Evans is arguably best known for dramatic roles in films like The Girl on the Train and the TV series The Alienist, he got his start in musical theater, so it was perhaps no surprise that he eventually got around to recording an album, 2019's At Last. While that was a covers album, he wrote original songs for the follow-up, 2022's adult contemporary-minded A Song for You.
Born in South Wales in 1979, Evans studied singing after leaving school (with Louise Ryan, who taught Charlotte Church) and won a scholarship to the London Studio Centre, from which he graduated in 2000. He began his career in musical theater, appearing in West End shows like Taboo, Rent, Miss Saigon, and Avenue Q, before breaking into Hollywood with his 2010 role as Apollo in the Clash of the Titans remake. Parts in The Three Musketeers, Immortals, The Raven, and the Hobbit trilogy followed, before his first leading role, as Prince Vlad Țepeș in 2014's box-office smash Dracula Untold.
In 2017, Evans' singing talents came to the attention of the wider public when he was cast as the villainous lothario Gaston in the live-action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Evans' debut album, At Last, was released in 2019 on BMG. Showcasing his rich, powerful voice, it featured a selection of covers in unique arrangements of classic tracks by such diverse artists as Cher, Pat Benatar, U2, Etta James, and Roberta Flack. That year, he could be seen in a half-dozen movies, including the Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston vehicle Murder Mystery and Angel of Mine, in which he co-starred with Noomi Rapace and Yvonne Strahovski. Meanwhile, he starred on The Alienist (2018-2020) and Nine Perfect Strangers (2021) and had the lead in the ITV detective series The Pembroke Murders (2021).
Following on BMG in 2022, his second album, A Song for You, consisted of original songs written in oceanside Florida while sheltering in place from COVID-19. It featured duets with Charlotte Church and Nine Perfect Strangers co-star Nicole Kidman.
