Kölsch's fourth full-length is a continuously mixed set of original productions released by Fabric, rather than longtime home Kompakt. Even more so than his other albums, this one is meant to evoke an extended global journey -- all of the tracks are named after specific flight numbers from Kölsch's busy international touring itinerary. The overall mood isn't quite as dramatic as his other full-lengths, and it's paced more like a proper DJ set at a club. Still, the gentle rushes of strings and dark, swirling synths ensure that these tracks are tense and emotionally stirring. Following the crashing waves of echo during "LH479" and the subdued, ruminative pianos of "SK1550," things really start to simmer during "EZY865," where a haunting, shredded vocal loop is met with rhapsodic strings. This segues into "VA5641," a cracking electro cut with a fuzzy, distant chiming pattern and complex yet funky synth arpeggios. Subsequent tracks like "KM477" have their trance-like moments, but manage to avoid getting too overblown -- Kölsch knows how to express sentiments and convey moods without sounding cheesy. The album winds down with "EI3227," a summery reminiscence graced with tranquil organs and flickers of wispy vocals near its conclusion. Fabric Presents Kölsch strikes a nice balance between club functionality and emotive storytelling. It hints at certain levels of intensity without inhabiting them, and while it's easy to listen to and get lost inside, it's never predictable or dull. ~ Paul Simpson

Electronic/Dance - Released June 8, 2015 | Kompakt

The first tastes of Rune Reilly Kölsch's second album for Kompakt were delivered on the Cologne label's 79th and 84th volumes of the 12" Speicher series, released respectively in June 2014 and April 2015. "Cassiopeia," "DerDieDas," and "Two Birds" hinted that 1983 would offer more of the producer's melodic, uplifting techno. The first of that bunch was made all the more dramatic by strings from Gregor Schwellenbach, the musician who previously reinterpreted a batch of Kompakt label favorites for Spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt. The collaboration wasn't a one-and-done deal, as 1983 contains a couple additional tracks intensified by Schwellenbach's handiwork. The most energetic Schwellenbach-Kölsch joint work, the jubilant and rush-generating "The Road," seems to be the track that most emotively reflects the producer's wistful view of bright-eyed childhood road trips from his native Denmark to France. Kölsch remains partial to gradual escalations in intensity that reach an apex just short of gaudy; just about every track features one in some form. While it takes some deep, repeated listening for each track to reveal its distinctive qualities, the lack of big "wait for it, wait for it" moments fosters a fluidity that gives it an edge over 1977. Apart from the opening and closing tracks -- an ambient but pulse-quickening intro and an atmospheric remix of Speicher 79 A-side "Papageno," featuring a reverbed, tremulous vocal from WhoMadeWho's WAA Industry -- the album is all about comfort and steady, forward motion. ~ Andy Kellman
