Freestyle

Freestyle is a Swedish pop and synthpop band formed in Stockholm in 1979, famous for its catchy hits and iconic early 1980s style. The band comprises Tommy Ekman, Christer Sandelin, Joakim Hagleitner, Gigi Hamilton, Diane Söderholm and Anders Uddberg. They quickly made a name for themselves with dance pop influenced by disco, schlager and early electronic sounds, marked by simple, catchy choruses typical of the Scandinavian aesthetic of the time. Their biggest hit, "Vill ha dej " (No. 1 in 1981), became a veritable Swedish pop anthem, still played regularly today. The song, with its naive lyrics and strong synthesizer presence, perfectly embodies the kitschy, happy pop spirit of the time. The band released two studio albums: Fantasi (1981), featuring hits such as "Fantasi " (No. 13), "Rider omkring " and "Ögon som glittrar " (No. 3), and Modiga agenter (1982), including the title track at No. 13. Despite their popularity in Sweden and the Nordic countries, Freestyle broke up in 1983. Several members continued their successful careers, including Christer Sandelin and Tommy Ekman, who went on to form the group Style, in a more mature synthpop vein. Gigi Hamilton also remained active in various musical projects. In 1998, the group released a new version of the hit "Fantasi " (no. 37), before occasional reunions in 2013 and 2018.
