Adventure

After relocating to Baltimore from North Carolina, beatmaker Benny Boeldt started hanging out with Wham City, a loose performance art/musical collective including Dina Kelberman and Dan Deacon. Making music under the pseudonym Adventure and signed to Baltimore's Carpark Records (home to several Wham City-related acts), Boeldt carved his self-titled 2008 album primarily out of the 8-bit chiptune aesthetic. He continued this sound on a split 12" EP with Deacon, and sang on his album Bromst, both of which appeared on Carpark in 2009. For his second album, he continued to embrace his digitized '80s roots, but took a gauzy approach, much like artists of the blossoming chillwave movement. He also incorporated his own vocals into his songs for the first time, resulting in wistful, starry-eyed new wave anthems. Lesser Known was released on Carpark in the spring of 2011. Weird Work, which stepped away from vocal-centric pop tunes and combined skittering IDM beats with rich, fluorescent melodies, arrived in 2013. Three years later, Boeldt released the frantic, playful 8 of Cups, his first album under his own name.
