Only two months after the masterful White Album, this tenth Beatles album was released in January 1969 and seems a bit... tired. The soundtrack to the animated film by Canadian George Dunning (which was released in theaters seven months earlier), Yellow Submarine offers thirteen tracks, of which only six (at the time, only side A) are by the Fab Four. The rest is largely the bringing together of various instrumentals by legendary producer George Martin. Overdubs and sound effects of all kinds, psychedelia is required from one end to the other for this great album. It is certainly one that remains essential to understanding the history of the group, without really ever reaching the level of RevolverSergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart Club or Abbey Road. ©MZ/Qobuz, Translation/BM

The White Album: The Beatles' Immaculate Conception

The Beatles' only double album, widely known as "The White Album", will turn fifty this year. It is celebrating this milestone with a much-expanded re-release containing a lot of previously-unreleased material. We take a look back at a record whose history is as complex as its content.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

Fleetwood Mac: The Blues Period

Fleetwood Mac led two consecutive lives: a blues-driven outfit from the 1960s led by Peter Green, one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, and another, a pop-rock band that became one of the most acclaimed groups of its era. Their 1977 album, “Rumours”, remains, forty years later, one of the best-selling records of all time and yet the band’s lesser-known early years are no less captivating.
