After having launched his Blue Note label collaboration with an album that fit quite anomalously into his discography—placing the sensual voice of young singer Gabrielle Cavassa at its heart through a repertoire of ballads and standards spanning all facets of American music (Where Are We)—Joshua Redman returns to the traditional quartet format for Words Fall Short. A decidedly less conceptual and more powerfully organic project, firmly rooted in jazz.

At the helm of a brand-new lineup composed of hyper-talented young musicians (Paul Cornish on piano, Philip Norris on double bass, and Nazir Ebo on drums), Joshua Redman takes up tenor and soprano saxophones to unload the full range of his talent in a blend of mastery and undiminished enthusiasm. Across eight original compositions spanning a wide array of moods and styles (from the tender and heady ballad "A Message to Unsed", offering Cornish space for a graceful solo, to the post-free drift of "She Knows", elevated by a dazzling soprano solo), the quartet—joined on a few tracks by handpicked guest artists who enrich the orchestral texture with their unique voices (saxophonist Melissa Aldana on "So It Goes"; young trumpeter Skylar Tang on "Icarus"; and Gabrielle Cavassa again for the closing track "Era’s End")—consistently demonstrates collective cohesion, fluidity, and controlled energy.

Fully integrated into the ensemble, at the height of his expressive maturity and seemingly freed from the need to please—which in the past sometimes burdened his playing with heavy-handed displays of virtuosity—Joshua Redman here delivers some of his finest performances to date, finding in his saxophone voice a particularly balanced and original blend of embodiment and refined distance. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
