Although still a teenager when she recorded her debut album, Words Came Back to Me, Sonya Kitchell made a noticeable impact with this 2006 release. The 12 original songs on the album owe a heavy debt to Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones, but they come across with a beautiful integrity and authority all their own. Kitchell's songs are as influenced by soul and jazz as they are by folk, and the whole album has the organic, expressive feeling of the best singer/songwriter records of the 1970s. Kitchell also has a penchant for remarkable hooks, and her lyrical content is honest, clever, and engaging, making for a nearly irresistible combination. That the album was picked up by Starbucks for the Hear Music Debut series, which made the album available in Starbucks stores, ensured Kitchell would get the audience she deserves.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

The Pioneers of Rock’n’Roll

Rock’n’roll isn’t dead. But you can count the pioneers of the genre who are still alive on two fingers: Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson. They’re 84 and 82. Lewis was a wild rocker signed with Sun Records who made history by igniting his instrument and transforming church music, country and boogie-woogie into wicked rock'n'roll. Jackson was a country singer who had a brilliant career alongside Elvis. Going from Little Richard to Chuck Berry, not forgetting Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Hank Williams, Qobuz pays tribute to the precursors of rock.

Charles Aznavour: Let The Show Begin!

Charles Aznavour’s life can be summed up with two words: “song” and “comedy”. Very much like a passionate craftsman, the 94-year-old interpreter gave everything he had to show business. So much so that he has made this theme one of the pillars of his work.
