With his fourth album recorded as Photay, producer and drummer Evan Shornstein has achieved his goal of creating a breezy listen. Windswept is an overt concept album, mixing electronic production and live instrumentation from Shornstein and guest players such as Carlos Niño and Nate Mercereau—who both contributed to André 3000's flute-forward New Blue Sun (2023) and performed on the Outkast co-founder's 2024 live tour.

Shornstein is no stranger to a theme; he constructed 2021's On Hold out of call-waiting samples. The songs on Windswept are named after wind conditions, many of which are increasingly part of global conversations about climate change. Electronically produced wind sounds run through the whole of the album, whether in tunes that veer into beatless ambience or consist of something more primed for dancing. A largely voiceless work, Windswept does begin and end with the same vocal refrain on "Forecast" and "Still Existing," respectively: "You are not alone/ when the wind blows."

Highlights include "Derecho," named after the term for the intense and long windstorm that is happening with increased frequency in the U.S. Midwest. Shornstein represents this potentially deadly phenomenon with a Kraftwerkian electronic heart and off-kilter bells. "Zephyr" is named for a gentle breeze, but the track is actually one of the liveliest.

However subtly, Windswept expresses a kind of climate change activism through music that's pleasant to hear and provokes further thought. © Tamara Palmer/Qobuz
