The full range of Ben Harper's influences would not come to bear until later albums, but his debut, Welcome to the Cruel World, lays a strong foundation. "Like a King" and "Take That Attitude to Your Grave" burn with a political conviction rarely heard during the 1990s. "Forever" has a tenderness which demonstrates Harper's emotional range. Lackluster hippie jams that cultivated his early following may have served a purpose but feel fluffy by comparison when compared to the meatier tracks. Ben closes the album with a song that frequently closes his concerts, "I'll Rise." This song, built around Maya Angelou's 1979 poem "And Still I Rise," reminds one of art's ability to pierce through society, self, and the soul.

Iggy and the Stooges: The Dawn of Punk

In 1969, a group of self-proclaimed numbskulls unleashed their distorted rock ‘n’ roll and nihilistic lyrics to the public. Fronting the Stooges was Iggy Pop, a guy whose dance moves almost seemed to resemble Nijinsky’s—only far more wild and far more rebellious. No wonder he was destined to become the godfather of punk rock.

Know Your Lemmy

Lemmy Kilmister passed away on the 28th of December 2015, after 40 years fronting Motörhead, the loudest rock’n’roll band in history. The icon, who was deemed to be immortal, died of cancer at the age of 70, inevitably taking Motörhead to the grave with him. The English rock band went through two decades of ups, downs, and misunderstandings—not that this ever transferred into the powerful sound they let loose on stage...

Nebraska: When Bruce Springsteen Laid Himself Bare

In 1982, at the height of his glory, the Boss surprised the world with “Nebraska”: a stripped back, entirely acoustic album; a timeless masterpiece bathed in echoes and reflections; an album that describes the fringes of America, and that many consider to be his best.
