Gregory Porter, who’s in his forties at this point in his career (most of which has been spent on the tough musical theatre circuit) was still more or less unknown when he released Water in November 2010. This was the first album he released under his own name on the small jazz label Motéma Music. Recorded live “the old-fashioned way,” the band features young up-and-coming musicians (including the particularly inspired and dedicated pianist and arranger Chip Crawford) as well as some New York jazz veterans such as the legendary saxophonist James Spaulding. The album immediately makes an impact with its deeply sincere and organic way of weaving links between distinctive styles, genres and generations. This repertoire skilfully mixes covers of the great classics (Skylark, But Beautiful and even Feeling Good, immortalised by Nina Simone and interpreted here a cappella) with an impressive series of original songs covering a wide range of styles and registers. Porter’s suave, lyrical and powerfully expressive voice has natural syncretism and a classical feel, and it’s nothing short of seductive. The ensemble never strays far from blues and gospel in order to better convey the similarities between the sophistication of the great swing singers like Nat King Cole and Johnny Hartman and the militant sensuality of soul singers like Marvin Gaye and Donnie Hathaway. This album by Gregory Porter is a powerful expression of humanism and unification, and it beautifully articulates both the intimate and the political. It offers a new take on the entire Afro-American vocal tradition to better capture his experience of timeless issues. Well received by the public, Water helped propel Gregory Porter into a successful career that would establish him as one of the biggest stars of contemporary jazz. By reissuing this album within its prestigious catalogue, Blue Note offers a new generation of music lovers the chance to discover the unrivalled power of his incredible, creative passion for music. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
