Throughout the group's history, Blessid Union of Souls has been unable to shake constant comparisons to Hootie & the Blowfish. Both feature African-American lead singers backed by workman-like bar bands with a pop sensibility. Walking Off the Buzz will do nothing to get rid of those comparisons, but it can be considered a pleasant diversion. The lead single, "Hey Leonardo" is a fun, radio-friendly hit that features the kind of playful pop culture references that you'd find in an Adam Sandler song. Another highlight is the ode to childhood, "South Hampton Avenue." Musically, the group still suffers from wearing their many influences on their sleeve. Going through each of the tracks, you can count the direct influence of artists like Counting Crows, the Eagles, and John Mellencamp among others. While Walking Off the Buzz is far from innovative, it is an agreeable blend of palatable ingredients from rock's past.
