The sought-after clarinetist Michael Collins is one of the most eminent players of his time, both regarded as soloist and great pedagogue. In his early career, he recorded five albums for EMI and Virgin, prelude to a rich discographic career. This album compiles some of the finest and most challenging pieces for clarinet and piano, from Poulenc’s Sonata to Weber’s Grand Duo. Recorded with in-demand accompanying pianist Kathryn Stott, it also features two curiosities: the Solo de concours written by André Messager, a composer we expect more in the lyrical genre, composed in 1899 for the entrance competition at the Paris Conservatory, and a concert Fantasy on Themes from "La traviata" by Donato Lovreglio, virtuoso flautist and arranger of many Verdi operas’ themes and arias for woodwinds. © Warner Classics

8 Great Women of Electronic

From the pioneers of musique concrete to the stars of 21st century clubbing, Qobuz is celebrating eight women who have left their own distinct marks on electronic music over the past fifty years.

Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.

Max Richter, Neo-classical Activist

With the release of his new album Exile, a reflection on exile with the Baltic Sea Orchestra, the iconoclast and prolific pioneer of the neo-classical movement confirms his status as one of the most ideologically committed artists out there. Melding classical and electronic music, physical and emotional worlds, he produces instrumental works of rare evocative power.
