No need to have the same musical tastes to appreciate each other’s cuisine... The proof of this truism can be found in this collaboration between a revered queen of alternative country and a respected old sage of modern jazz: Lucinda Williams and Charles Lloyd, a one-day couple supported by a five-star cast of musicians in which we find guitarist Bill Frisell, pedal steel master Greg Leisz, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland... Both Lloyd and Williams have previously lead a revolution in their respective fields. Here, the duo are celebrating a certain idea of America with an open-minded repertoire. A heterogeneous menu mixing jazz, blues, country and rock'n'roll, with Williams only singing on half of the ten tracks. Vanished Gardens offer up Jimi Hendrix (Angel) as well as Thelonious Monk (Monk's Mood) and Roberta Flack (Ballad of The Sad Young Men), though they also include some of their signature dishes (three by Charles Lloyd and four by Lucinda Williams). This is, above all, a refined and profound album; the work of two musicians who know how to digest well decades of music. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

The Resilience and Rebellion of Lucinda Williams

If you're looking for Lucinda Williams' worldview in her music, it can be found somewhere between "Drunken Angel," and "Get Right With God." Coupled with genuine empathy for the foibles of humanity—and respect for the allure, urgency and wreck 'n' ruin of relationships—Williams has always had a healthy awe for the powers of good and evil, a looming sense of the vigilant almighty. From the album's title to the worried cover photo, a sense of misgiving hangs over the songs on her compelling new album, Good Souls Better Angels.

Nat King Cole, a King for All

Timeless and universally adored, Nat King Cole would have celebrated his 100th birthday on March 17th, 2019. The sophisticated pianist and silky crooner was immensely popular with mainstream audiences in the forties and fifties, while still fascinating genuine jazz fans with his innate class. In the land of royalty, the King (Cole) had earned his place alongside the Duke (Ellington) and the Count (Basie).

Marc Ribot, the anti-guitar hero

For thirty-five years, Marc Ribot’s name has been on the covers of albums by Tom Waits, Alain Bashung, Diana Krall, John Zorn, Robert Plant, Caetano Veloso and numerous other artists, and when he's not busy lending his unique guitar to others, the New Yorker takes pleasure, under his own name, in breaking down and re-building rock, jazz, funk, Cuban music and anything his fingers touch.
