Released in time for Halloween 2014 -- and right on the heels of his studio-slick major comeback Ryan Adams and melodic hardcore tribute 1984 -- the Vampires EP is an installment in Adams' 7" line PAX-AM Singles Series. Despite the spooky titles, this isn't monster-rock -- the exception is the goof "Clown Asylum" -- and musically it adheres closer to 1984 than the eponymous EP, although even that is slightly misleading. This is loud guitar rock but it's also atmospheric, evoking the minor-key melancholia of the '90s quite effectively on "Magic Flag," but the highlight might be the ragged AC/DC chords of the closer, "Suburbia."
