Franz Lachner was one of Germany's most popular composers of the 1830s, with his Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 52 ("Passionata"), winning a major Viennese symphony contest in 1836. His works had many performances but also some detractors, chief among them was Robert Schumann in the pages of his Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. Conductor Gernot Schmalfuss and the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (located in Taiwan, not Washington state) have conducted a periodic attempt at the rediscovery of his eight symphonies, with this recording of his Symphony No. 4 in E major appearing in 2025. The variety of opinions persists to the present day. Lachner was a friend of Schubert's, and some find in pieces like the Andante movement of the present symphony an extension of Schubert's dancelike, Viennese mode into larger structures. For others, Lachner's big outer movements are packed with dense material that has no strong urge to go anywhere, unlike the finale of the vast Symphony No. 9 in C major, D. 944, of Schubert. Listeners can make up their own minds on this, but the enthusiasm of Schmalfuss and the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra is a major point in the album's favor. It shouldn't be forgotten that Schumann's symphonies were once considered dull until conductors figured out how to bring them alive, and it is possible that the same could occur with Lachner. At the very least, those interested in the scene in the years after Beethoven's death will find much to consider here. The album made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025.
