In 2013, Chick Corea teamed up with a couple of gold-standard rhythmists - Christian McBride on the double bass and Brian Blade on drums - with whom he recorded Trilogy, a brilliant live album which saw him blend his own repertoire with classic standards by Thelonious Monk, Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein, Kurt Weil, Irving Berlin & co. Just as the title indicates, Trilogy 2 repeats the exercise: same cast, same idea, same great result. Of course, the relationship between the three of them has been consolidated over the years. And while Corea’s piano remains one of the best of his generation, it’s the McBride/Blade tandem that really shines as a creative stroke of genius. The accuracy of their interventions and punctuations are staggering, never off-kilter and never over the top. Finally, the repertoire is a touch more original than on the previous Trilogy, with Steve Swallow’s Eiderdown, Monk’s Crepuscule with Nellie, 500 Miles High by Return to Forever, Lotus Blossom by Billy Strayhorn as well as Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

ECM in 10 Albums

“The most beautiful sound next to silence.” That’s been ECM’s motto for the past fifty years. Manfred Eicher, the charismatic founder of the Munich label, seems to live in a parallel universe. And jazz sounds different on planet ECM. It is often thanks to this label that artists such as Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea have recorded their best records. Even more so than with Blue Note or Impulse! Limiting the whole history of this extraordinary label to just 10 records would be mission impossible. So, these 10 albums will tell not “the” story but “a” story of ECM.

Miles Davis in 10 albums

Thirty years after his death, Miles Davis is still one of the most important musicians of his time. The trumpeter's impressive discography perfectly sums up his perpetually questioning, probing attitude; and also shows how his influence reaches out beyond the world of jazz. These ten albums, selected subjectively from a sea of revolutionary works, are testament to that fact.

Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.
