The title of this album by Canadian violist Marina Thibeault is taken from the new work by Quebec composer Jean Lesage, Toquade, which might translate as Whim, Infatuation, Rapture, Hang-up or the like; although the choice has more to do with finding a quirky attention-catching bait, since Thibeault has selected a repertoire much more classical than avant-garde or very contemporary. Indeed, the major works chosen are sonatas by Hindemith – for solo viola – and Martinů – viola and piano –, two great moments in the life of any self-respecting violist. Further works are by Tchaikovsky, Glinka and a sprinkling of short pieces by contemporary Canadian composers. Named as the “Révélation Radio-Canada 2016-2017”, Marina Thibeault has been traveling the world as a much sought-after ambassador of her instrument. In addition to her numerous appearances as a concert soloist, she is an avid chamber musician, and has collaborated with members of the Guarneri Quartet, the Cleveland Quartet, and the London Haydn Quartet, amongst other great chamber musicians. Her interest in new music has led her to work with composers such as John Corigliano and Krzysztof Penderecki. She plays on a 1854 viola by famous luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume! © SM/Qobuz
