Always keen to spice things up, Thylacine has spent the last two years going on musical journeys. He boarded a train on Transsiberian in 2015 and jumped into a caravan in South America for the double volume Roads. In Spring when the world was frozen in lockdown, the French electronic producer spent his days shut up in a chalet in the Swiss alps. He’s decided to journey into the past with this album, revisiting works by classical composers – the likes of Satie, Debussy, Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven, Fauré and Schubert. While most recent projects have tried to link the two styles by going for a more conceptual approach, William Rezé takes a more direct route and offers up a series of remixed classical music “hits”. He samples the first few notes of Satie’s Gymnopédie n.1 and sets them to an airy house beat. He covers Gnossienne 1 on an acoustic guitar. He supports Verdi’s Dies Irae with a heavy techno beat, while still preserving the original’s raw drama, and manages to build a bridge between the Italian composer and American EDM. A great record. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Jean-Michel Jarre, 50 Years of Electronic Music

To celebrate his 50-year-long career, Jean-Michel Jarre has released the edifying compilation Planet Jarre, a collection of 41 tracks that highlight the path set by the pioneer of electronic music. It’s a wonderful opportunity to look back over the five decades during which the Frenchman expressed himself as an artist, a mad scientist, a visionary, a sucker for record breaking spectacles, an activist and now the torchbearer for artists struggling for fairer pay online.

R&S Records: When Belgium set the pace

In 35 years of existence, Belgian label R&S (founded by Renaat Vandepapeliere and Sabine Maes) has browsed through all the subgenres of electronic music. Most importantly, it’s been on the forefront of almost all of the revolutions in the history of this niche music scene: techno, house, hard-core, drum’n’bass and dubstep. Let’s look back on ten key moments for this label that became synonymous with avant-garde, setting the pace for the electronic music industry, and let’s dive into some of Renaat Vandepapeliere’s fondest memories.

Laurent Garnier, the fight for techno

As he recently celebrated the 30th year of his career in October 2017 at the Rex Club in Paris, Qobuz seized this opportunity to dive into the musical journey of Laurent Garnier, a pioneer of the French electronic scene who spent three decades fighting for the recognition of a music genre that had been ostracized by the media and institutions. Let’s take a look at this uphill battle for techno.
