Thomas Lloyd's Bonhoeffer is described by the composer as a choral theater piece, and it includes dance and other movement elements that are not present in a recording. Some may find a musical work about the German Lutheran pastor who paid with his life for his anti-Nazi activities timely. Yet beyond these factors is the question of whether the work, recorded here for the first time, succeeds as choral music on its own terms. The answer is an only lightly qualified affirmative. The texts draw on Bonhoeffer's own writings, and in a way so does the music: Lloyd creates a flexible language that evokes the layers of Bonhoeffer's life. He is a protagonist in the drama (no soloist is credited), but his voice is heard against a musical backdrop depicting the last years of his life. Sample track six, where Bonhoeffer objects to the collaborationist bishop Ludwig Müller's support for a measure restricting German citizenship to those of pure-blooded German descent: Lloyd responds with a mixture of a Bach chorale and a Nazi anthem on the organ. Lloyd's evocations of Bonhoeffer's religious backgrounds are not simply restricted to Bach chorales, but cover a lot of musical ground, and he creates a modern (although never atonal) musical language that holds together. Only the incorporation of African-American spirituals jars a bit. The small choir The Crossing under Donald Nally has performed the work live and handles it confidently here. This is an important work that might find performances in any number of campus events dealing with 20th century history.
