Swiss alto saxophonist George Robert went for first-caliber musicians across the board for this 1997 studio session. Not only did he recruit the greatest living alto saxophonist, Phil Woods, but the rest of the group consists of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ray Drummond, and Woods' drummer of over two decades, Bill Goodwin. Robert composed five of the songs, including the furious "Crossroads" and the very lyrical waltz "Mom's Song," a tribute to Robert's mother, who passed away just two months prior to the session. Woods' contributed the bossa nova "Smoke Dreams," which features both men on clarinet, as well as "Apples & Cheese," a engaging chart with Robert and Woods back on alto saxes. "Perdido" is another swinging feature for two clarinets, during which the band takes its time working around the theme without actually stating it until it is almost over. All five men are to be commended for their contributions to this highly recommended CD.
