Normand Corbeil's score for the Michael Caine political thriller The Statement is an elegant blend of long string motifs and pastoral choral arrangements steeped in religious melancholy. This is "classic" drama music done to perfection by a talented composer whose work on the mini-series Hitler: The Rise of Evil was nominated for an Emmy Award. Corbeil recorded the women's chorale in a renovated church in London, lending weight to the religious conflict of the pious protagonist -- who is a fugitive charged with crimes against humanity. The main theme is a descending wash of minor-key chamber strings that flirt with dissonance but remain rooted in Anglo simplicity. The slow insertion of the choir into pieces like "C'mon Let's Go" mirrors Caine's reluctance to face his maker and the burden that he carries throughout. The score is short, reflective, and satisfying, never straying from its winning formula of suffering and redemption. Normand Corbeil should be rewarded for one of the most heartfelt and restrained offerings of 2004.
