Country singer Elton Britt may have been somewhat of a conundrum (an intensely private man, he made a try for the most public position in the world when he ran for President of the United States in 1960), but he sure could yodel, and his smooth, unassuming professionalism means his work still holds up in a contemporary context. This set makes a fine introduction to this one-of-a-kind singer, who spent the bulk of his musical career with RCA Records, releasing over 50 albums for the label between 1939 and 1957 before leaving to record for ABC/Paramount. The 23 songs presented here hardly sum up the case, since Britt recorded some 600 songs over the years, but they certainly sketch the outline of this intriguing singer. Oh, and that yodel. It remains the standard against which all yodels are measured. Think of a jazz clarinet solo on a sad, rainy night, with all the human emotions of the world inside of it. You'll never think of yodeling the same again.
