Converge is atypical: more so than ever. Even its status as a "cult band" seems too reductive. They are no longer an elite seeking to convert the masses. And, looking at their ninth album in 27 years, it will be hard to tell what its impact might be. Will it make a bigger splash than Jane Doe? Or will it join the handful of albums since, which have all deserved a better response? It's true that, without really being what you could call a commercial success, All We Love We Leave Behind seemed to mark a kind of progress upon its release in 2012. But once again it seemed that Converge just had no desire to repeat or develop a promising recipe. So there was no repetition on The Dusk in Us, then, beyond a clearly-defined personality and a blending of styles that's more adept than ever. Far from the overblown style of much contemporary metal, the Boston quartet is pushing on into ever-more technical performances, but has been able, miraculously, to preserve the clean, hardcore punk rage of their first outings, while charging the whole thing with a dose of earnestly-felt emotion. Where others, regardless of their genre, tend to calm down, to introduce unremarkable melodies or slow down the tempo, Converge is moving forward without making their peace with the world in the slightest. The two leaders, Jacob Bannon and Kurt Ballou, are quite capable of doing that: we have had several indications of that on this album as well as on the previous ones (The Dusk In Us, Thousands Of Miles Between Us), in the vocals as well as the guitars. But, at their best, the atmosphere is still sinister, stifling even, and no-one could accuse them of growing complacent. And there again, they owe a lot here to the hair-raising drumming of Ben Koller, who can rival the best efforts of Dave Lombardo or Joey Jordison with jazzy syncopations, or the prog sounds of Mike Portnoy or Carl Palmer (one of his touchstones), without abandoning the hardcore punk of a Bill Stevenson or D.H. Peligro. Those who might doubt it only need to check out the drum cam footage from his shows with Killer Be Killed online... Time seems to have taken no toll on this group which is leading the pack in more than one sense. One might even say that this album has been recorded as if it were their début. But perhaps also as if it were their last. Behind a coolly-organised chaos, the compositions are teeming with ideas and references; and while one might legitimately think that a gap exists, or rather a gulf, between At the Drive-In and The Dillinger Escape Plan or between Slayer and Mastodon, Converge fills it in insolently. © JPS/Qobuz
