The music of Chopin seems like pure pianism, but in the transcription-happy 19th century, it wasn't so simple. Cellist Auguste Franchomme was a friend of Chopin's, was the dedicatee of Chopin's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, and, with Chopin's approval, transcribed much of his solo piano music for cello. These transcriptions have not been widely recorded, and to have them in these fine, restrained performances by cellist Camille Thomas is a treat. They're not, as might have been expected, transcriptions for cello and piano but rather for cello and other string groups of various sizes, giving a quartet-like texture. The various technique Franchomme uses to foreground the solo melody is consistently interesting. Equally so are the works by Franchomme himself, which seem to reflect a good deal of Chopin's influence at a time when his music was pretty much sui generis otherwise. Two Franchomme etudes for solo cello are included; these are not Paganini-style virtuoso works but elegant essays that helped to define the French instrumental style. The Air russe varié for cello and strings would enliven any cello concert. A worthwhile and often delightful slice of Chopin's world.
