Cuban-born composer and conductor Tania Léon is celebrated as an exponent of multicultural music, and she is increasingly regarded as a forerunner of early 21st century eclecticism. In Motion, her 2011 release on Albany Records with the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, the Son Sonora Ensemble and Voices, and DanceBrazil Percussion, displays her avid interest in world music, represented by her 1973 composition Haiku, and Inura, written in 2009. For Haiku, Léon has set 17 spoken Japanese verses to music of an atmospheric and evocative nature, using western and eastern instruments as well as electronic sounds that reflect the fragile and fleeting impressions conveyed in the intimate and ephemeral poetry. Inura, inspired by the syncretistic religion Candomblé, is much more propulsive, energetic, and volatile in character, incorporating rhythms and motives of African, Caribbean, and Brazilian traditions and emphasizing a large percussion battery. Stylistically, Haiku is a product of its time, sounding fragmentary, pointillistic, and vaguely atonal, while Inura is more connected and flowing, with a modal quality in its diatonic melodies and harmonies. Because the performances date from their respective years of composition, there is a big difference between the hazy analog sound of Haiku and the transparent and close-up digital recording of Inura. But the performances of both works are convincing, and they're both worthy examples of Léon's vibrant and communicative music.
