The original black metal bands could not have envisioned the strange, dark realms into which their progeny would take the original blueprint of the sound. One such offspring, Norway’s Taake, exist in a murky twilight of guitars and drumming that scour like heavy sleet on a barren hillside. Their name (which translates as “fog”) couldn’t be more appropriate. The album TAAKE is a dark and tormented thing, heavy in atmosphere, though songs like “Doedsjarl” and “September Omsider” display a venom-esque fire in the belly that contrasts with the grim meditations on the rest of the album.
