Bing Crosby was a prolific recording artist over his 50-year career. Because of the era in which he lived, he was lucky enough to record early versions of what are now considered American songbook classics. On SWINGING ON A STAR, Crosby croons on a variety of these standards; the composers covered on this CD reads like a "who's who" of show business greats.
On this release, Crosby sings songs from the greatest songwriting teams of all time, including works by Jerome Kern/Gus Kahn, George/Ira Gershwin, Johnny Burke/Jimmy Van Heusen, and Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer. Crosby sings two pieces by the inimitable Cole Porter: namely "Don't Fence Me In" and the legendary, "Begin the Beguine." Accompanists include Burke/Van Heusan's "Put It there Pal" with Bob Hope, the Gershwin brothers' "Mine" with Judy Garland, and several other numbers with the Andrew Sisters. The highlight of the album is Crosby's Dixieland version of "I Ain't Got Nobody," backed by the superb clarinetist Woody Herman.
