The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performs these rich-sounding, generally good-humored works by Richard Strauss with polish under conductor Herbert Blomstedt. Burleske, Strauss' work for piano and orchestra that is quintessentially Romantic in style, has clearly defined roles for the orchestra and the piano, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet is as precise and refined as the orchestra, never trying to outshine it. The excellent sound of the recording also balances the piano and orchestra well. Burleske is at times sprightly, dramatic but not melodramatic, carefree, and energetic. The "Waltz Sequences" from Der Rosenkavalier are also filled with energy and constant movement. Blomstedt makes them rousing, but enthusiasm is smoothly controlled, so there is never a sense that these are anything less than cultured, civilized, elegant dances. The Sextet is similarly treated, although it is allowed to become a little more intimately passionate. Each of these works looks backward in its own way, and represents music as a form of art rather than a diversion. Blomstedt makes sure they are given all the respect they deserve.
