Atlanta indie rock trio Omni released their Sub Pop debut (and third overall album), Networker, in November 2019. It was an obvious level-up for the well-regarded group, setting the stage for a wider appreciation of their spiky-yet-genteel take on melodic post-punk. The COVID-19 pandemic had other plans and the early 2022 lockdowns put a quick stop to all the band's forward momentum; beyond a lone Bandcamp Friday digital single featuring live covers of Billy Joel and 10cc, Omni pretty much disappeared. While one wouldn't have faulted them for throwing in the post-pandemic towel, it's nonetheless thrilling to see the group back in action and clearly able to pick up where they left off. Omni’s ability to combine prickly, staccato arrangements and a sort of languorous swagger is what sets them apart, and whether it's a cut like the forceful groove of "Plastic Pyramid" (which even throws in a bonus country-twang breakdown) or the glitchy swing of "F1," they always manage to inject a bit of rhythmic boldness that's funk-aware without ever actually being funky. Souvenir is still a taut and tight album. Not one of the 11 songs cracks the four-minute mark and most hover around two-and-a-half minutes; still, Omni packs a lot of ideas and dynamics into songs like "Double Negative" (in which three distinct sonic ideas collide; thankfully one of them is a raucously anthemic chorus) and "Common Mistakes," which melds brisk, cymbal-riding off-kilter pogo-punk and Spoon-like dreamy interludes—all in less than two minutes. Instead of coming across like an overdetermined flex, the cool confidence of the band's delivery makes Souvenir a unique and personality-rich slab of indie rock. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz
