John P. Strohm is perhaps best-known for his roles in two seminal Boston bands: co-founder of the Blake Babies and occasional guitarist and drummer in the Lemonheads. However, the Indiana native also fronted the early '90s indie group Antenna and later detoured into the business side of the music industry, becoming a lawyer and also serving as president of Rounder Records.

Given Strohm's busy schedule, it's perhaps unsurprising the solo effort Something To Look Forward To is his first new album in over 15 years. But these songs grew out of a period of profound grief: the death of Strohm's creative collaborator and close friend, the producer/musician Ed Ackerson. The result is that Something To Look Forward To is a gentle, gorgeous collection full of wisdom gleaned from a life well lived that also honors Ackerson's commitment to pristine sonics.

Produced by Gregory Lattimer (Albert Hammond Jr, Mya Byrne), the album emerged during sessions at Lattimer’s garage studio, Make Sound Good. The standout "Ruins" is a warm piano ballad laced with lilting strings; "Lancaster" is languid Americana with an early rock 'n' roll groove; and "This American Lie" recalls Fountain of Wayne's most heartfelt moments. Highlight "Troubleland," with Aaron Lee Tasjan, is a fuzz-toned midtempo rocker with an indelible hook.

Tasjan isn't the only guest on Something To Look Forward To. Strohm enlisted contributions from drummer Marshall Vore and bassist Harrison Whitford from Phoebe Bridgers’ band, as well as singer-songwriters Erin Rae and Courtney Marie Andrews, all of whom deepen the music with melodic harmonies and textures. Ackerson also contributed to several songs, adding a bittersweet edge, and Strohm skillfully weaves together sadness and optimism. For example, on "Lancaster" he murmurs, "It's like we got all the time in the world." The expression scans like both a promise and a fingers-crossed hope—the kind of delicate balance Something To Look Forward To traverses with ease. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
