A few years from now, the cache of music recorded during the worldwide pandemic of 2020 is going to be a unique time capsule of uncertainty, fear and confusion. But Elizabeth and the Catapult's fifth album, sincerely, e, will stand out as a glimmer of hope. Frontwoman Elizabeth Ziman says that, after an initial period of stasis when she was hit by writer's block from all the loneliness and communication breakdowns of forced isolation, she had a breakthrough: During that summer in New York City, things suddenly felt alive again, as people dined in the streets and felt the sunshine on their skin. You can hear it in the bouncy percussion, sweet guitar strumming and lively whistles of "Pop the Placebo," about finding faith where you can, be it in crystals or healers or good old positive thinking. "I don't care how I get there, darlin'/ Name the cure and I'll comе runnin'," Ziman sings, ready to fake it till the world makes it. "Birds and the Bees" tries to find humanity in the absurdity of circumstance. "Underneath my mask I smile as big as ever/ hope she knows that I was flattered by the creases in my eyes," she sings of encountering a stranger at the deli, then rolls into a nostalgic piano rag reminiscent of Regina Spektor. At other times, Ziman trades in the quirky jazz pacing and tough-girl attitude of Amy Winehouse ("Thirsty"), cowgirl campfire songs ("Sweet Chariot") and coffeehouse trip-hop ("The Muse"). "Together Alone" starts off like Roberta Flack piano soul, then turns into an apocalyptic Tori Amos nursery rhyme about the false satisfaction of social media scrolling: "My brain is connected to my hand is connected to my phone/ One more photo of a wedding or a picture-perfect home." Doo-wop and Brill Building girl-group pop get an irresistble update on "Sha La La," a love letter to being in love in NYC that makes it feel like summer can't come soon enough. The record slows down over the last few songs, but moody closer "Love Always Wins" feels right—a reassurance that New York City, and the world, will come back: "Let's wait it out until the night creeps in once again/ 'Cause love always wins." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
