Moving up to nationally distributed independent label Rounder Records, the Bobs addressed themselves to a variety of contemporary concerns, from the hesitant love affair of a Fotomat attendant and a UPS carrier to the joys and problems of synaesthesia (hearing in colors). They employed a drummer here and there, but most of the "vocal percussion" was provided by Joe Finetti and Richard Greene, who even sounded like synthesized drum machines now and then. (Finetti even handled the "vocal trumpet" solos.) It was a comedy act, to be sure, but The Bobs covered enough ground and were imaginative enough to transcend the main limitation for most humorous material -- that once you've heard it, you don't need to hear it again.
