With the release of the second volume of their complete cycle of Dmitri Shostakovich’s string quartets, the instrumentalists of Cuarteto Casals are setting a new benchmark for the vast repertoire of the Soviet composer. The Spanish quartet demonstrates remarkable refinement, while also knowing when to be biting and intense as they move through the works in chronological order.
Caught between the hammer and the sickle, Shostakovich spent his life navigating the pressures of power while striving to express his own convictions. This new volume, dedicated to Quartets Nos. 6 through 12, reaffirms the musical excellence already praised in Cuarteto Casals’ previous release. These seven quartets all belong to the post-Stalin period, during which Shostakovich was finally able to give voice to his true nature and most intimate thoughts, caught between revolt and existential anxiety.
Spanning from the luminously neoclassical Sixth Quartet to the Twelfth, dedicated to Dmitri Tsyganov (first violinist of the Beethoven Quartet, which premiered nearly all of Shostakovich’s quartets), the composer sketches a sort of indirect self-portrait; his griefs, remarriages, and the inevitable turmoil of both his private and public life.
