Scott Joplin's ragtime piano works are fairly often recorded nowadays, but 50 years ago, they were all but unknown. Two pianists changed that, Dick Hyman and Joshua Rifkin, and they took sharply different approaches to ragtime based on their backgrounds; Hyman was a jazz pianist, and Rifkin came from the classical world. Rifkin's recordings have been reissued, but until now, Hyman's have been the preserve of those who have dug out the original releases. Here, Sony (the owner of the original RCA label) presents Hyman's complete recordings of Joplin's music, not only the rags but also marches, waltzes, other dances, and even The School of Ragtime, Joplin's little book of ragtime etudes. True to his jazz background, Hyman also includes a few improvisations on famous rags. Another draw is the inclusion of the original liner notes by Rudi Blesh, which include the information that Brahms heard ragtime at the end of his life and hoped to write some. A few of Hyman's performances became quite famous in their own day; his version of The Entertainer was featured in the film The Sting, and his rapid, intense Maple Leaf Rag was widely aired. The latter gave Hyman a reputation for disregarding Joplin's instruction that "it is never right to play ragtime fast," but actually -- hear the Gladiolus Rag -- Hyman was also capable of being poetic along the lines of Rifkin's Chopin-esque readings. His decision to apply syncopation to the even 16th notes of the right hand in the late Magnetic Rag is questionable, especially inasmuch as he reads aloud Joplin's written introductions to The School of Ragtime, which explicitly say not to do this. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable and immensely valuable collection that includes pieces that are still very rarely available.
