Guitar interpretations of Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas go back a long way, with Andrés Segovia, in particular, frequently including Scarlatti in his concerts. Such interpretations are invariably accompanied by an indication that Scarlatti was influenced by Spanish guitar music, which is true enough. Guitarists Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli do not stint on this aspect of Scarlatti's music, and indeed, they point out that the duo guitar format is especially suited to bringing this influence out, adding resonance to the descending four-note Phrygian figures and other details familiar now from flamenco music. However, Micheli also notes (in his fine annotation, which also includes a killer quote from Robert Schumann criticizing Scarlatti but unwittingly serving to indicate his greatness) that the guitar during this period was actually more popular in Italy, where Scarlatti began his career than in Spain. The idea here is that the guitar's influence extended into realms, such as vocal music, beyond the Spanish characteristics. Mela and Micheli choose mostly expansive Scarlatti sonatas, sometimes elaborating them slightly, and their two-guitar arrangements are brilliant and detailed. About the only complaint here is the sound from a college auditorium in the U.S. state of Georgia that picks up extraneous noise and has a cavernous quality. Otherwise, this is a hugely exciting Scarlatti release.
