On sale -50%The Naxos label's Music of Brazil series, partly financed by the Brazilian ministry of foreign affairs, has done its job in bringing exposure to Brazilian music that was unknown elsewhere. This release of works for solo instruments by Claudio Santoro offers an excellent example. The Fantasias Sul América, composed for a youth competition sponsored by the Sul América insurance company, occupy an interesting space between discrete works and multi-sectional single work; they were performed separately and could certainly provide new repertory for instrumentalists (in Brazil, they have been used in conservatories), but some of them are linked thematically or by unique transitional sections for wind trio. The harmonic language is also distinctive. They are characterized by free atonality and have aspects of 12-tone construction but never enter totally into that, instead settling from time to time on tonal centers. Perhaps what makes them most interesting is their idiomatic instrumental writing. Sample the Fantasia Sul América for solo double bass or the one for voice and piano, the only duet, which has no text and is a vocalise; the latter could profitably be programmed with Rachmaninov's similar work if the soloist had the stamina for it. The program concludes with a Sonata for solo violin in four short movements from Santoro's early years; it is recognizably the product of the same composer. An intriguing and accessible glimpse into a little-known corner of modern musical culture.
