An official member of the ECM family since 2009, Andy Sheppard is carrying on the musical explorations which he began in 2015 with guitarist Eivind Aarset, double-bassist Michel Benita and drummer Seb Rochford on their album Surrounded By Sea. Throughout Romaria (a song by the Brazilian Renato Teixeira made popular in the early 1970s by Elis Regina), we find the serenity at the heart of this music which stands apart from times and fashions. Above all, the great stature of Sheppard's compositions means that the listener is never taken hostage by the atmosphere. And by the same token, the improvisations remain tightly coiled within the pieces' melodic framework.
At 61 years old, the British saxophonist is more than ever a master of his art, offering a sound as ample as it is lyrical. Nothing, however, is overbearingly signposted on this record, made in Lugano in Switzerland, under the eye of Mr ECM himself, Manfred Eicher. Far from conventional, the incredible Benita/Rochford rhythm produces bifurcations as welcome as they are unexpected. In short, with Romaria, Andy Sheppard provides doubters with further proof, were any needed that remains one of the most inspired sax players of his generation. © MZ/Qobuz
