The operas and symphonic poems of Richard Strauss continue to be his most popular works, and there have been many reissues of them in 2014 to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. However, his rather large body of vocal music has remained largely neglected, and even in the flurry of activity surrounding the birthday celebrations, there have been few releases of this wealth of material. German label TwoPianists has prepared for this exigency by issuing an authoritative box set of nine CDs that cover Strauss' extant output of 179 lieder and 2 melodramas, produced under the careful direction of mezzo-soprano and Strauss expert Brigitte Fassbaender. She has selected the German singers for the project, several of whom are established Strauss interpreters, and she has taken pains to make this set a standard reference, including two of Strauss' songs that receive their premiere recordings here, Aus der Kindheit and Herbstabend. A contemporary of Gustav Mahler and Hugo Wolf, Strauss composed songs in a similar late-Romantic vein and employed texts by many of the same German poets they set. Yet despite the shared cultural aspects, and his obvious genius, Strauss' lieder never enjoyed the comprehensive coverage Mahler's and Wolf's have received, so this presentation is a much needed restoration. It is a thoroughly researched and exquisitely produced package, with subtle and highly expressive singing, sympathetic accompanists, and phenomenal recorded sound, so lovers of late 19th century vocal music should definitely try this remarkable collection.
